In a first-ever KHSAA matchup between the two programs, the Heritage Christian Academy boys’ basketball team welcomed Fort Campbell to Hopkinsville on Tuesday night. The Warriors got a leg up in what may become an 8th-District rivalry, topping the Falcons 52-38 on the strength of a strong 2nd-quarter offensive performance.
Warriors’ leading scorer Carlos Robles scored six straight points early on for an 8-3 advantage and a Fort Campbell timeout. The Falcons pulled even on Aiden Blaszkowski’s second 3-pointer of the 1st quarter before Weston Powell scored the final four points of the frame for a 14-10 HCA lead.
The Warriors broke the game open in the 2nd, starting with a 12-4 spurt capped with a dunk by Matt Wills. Fort Campbell closed to within nine after Amari Woody scored in the lane with 2:45 left in the half, but HCA closed on a 10-0 run, punctuated by another Wills slam, for a 39-20 score at the break.
Trenton Hayes scored five and Powell added four more points and the Warriors held the Falcons scoreless over the first six minutes of the 3rd quarter to stretch the margin to 26.
HCA took its foot off the gas in the 4th, only scoring two points. Nate Miles scored all six of his points for the Falcons over the final eight minutes, with Tahlil Strayhorn adding five to narrow the final margin to 14.
The Warriors and Falcons will see each other again in less than a week with an All-A 2nd Region tournament matchup scheduled for January 11 at Fort Campbell.
