Dale Brown talks to LSU fans at the ceremony naming the court in his honor.
Former LSU coach Dale Brown had the court at LSU named for him during a ceremony last week when the Tigers beat Kentucky. For Brown, there was no other team to have at LSU on his special day. He knew Kentucky was the team to beat when he started at LSU and had some bitter defeats and great wins over the Wildcats.
But whether UK fans want to believe it or not, Brown always had great respect for the UK program and still does. He talks with Kentucky coach John Calipari and constantly checks on how the Wildcats are doing.
He wanted me to share with UK fans what he said at the recent dedication ceremony where a lot of his players returned to be part of.
“I thank all the players, coaches, trainers, secretaries, athletic directors, university administrators, managers, ball boys, medical staff, chaplains, jobbers, wonderful (LSU) Deaf Dome fans, assembly center staff, and parents that trusted us with their sons,” Brown told the crowd.
“It was our goal to broaden their vision of the world so that their lives were not focused on the game to the conclusion of all else. Time and time again, we must tell them goodbye.
“As we study them now men, we study ourselves. What have we done with them? Are they better or worse? They are living records of our own failures and successes. Really that is what coaching should be about. Other people’s lives and what we help them do with those lives.
“I am eternally grateful to have been the LSU basketball coach for 25 years.” Brown
