Tayvion Robinson admits Kentucky was “not a very pass friendly school in the past” but that didn’t stop him from transferring from Virginia Tech to UK.
“(Offensive coordinator) Liam (Coen) has changed the offense,” said Robinson. “They had the best recruiting class in school history and a lot of receivers are very good. Young guys kind of make me feel young. It will be a lot of fun teaching them and seeing their development in the year I am here.”
Robinson should know a few tricks to show the young UK receivers. He caught 113 passes for 1,555 yards and nine touchdowns in 36 games, including 30 starts, at Virginia Tech. He led the Hokies in receptions (44) and receiving touchdowns (5) in 2021 and was second in receiving yards with 559.
Robinson said he was “thankful” for his time at Virginia Tech but liked the “opportunity” he found at Kentucky to move forward. He was intrigued by the success Wan’Dale Robinson had in 2021 when he set UK school records for receptions and receiving yards in one season. The two play the same position.
“Wan’Dale’s success really made me watch a lot of their football,” the Virginia Tech transfer said. “I wanted to have a year like that. When opportunity came knocking, I ran at it.”
He could never have imagined that might happen when UK beat Virginia Tech in the 2019 Belk Bowl when was a freshman.
“It was the Lynn Bowden show,” Tayvion Robinson said.
Kentucky turned to Bowden, a receiver, to play quarterback due to injuries and beat Tech in a testy game, Ironically, the game-winning touchdown came on a rare Bowden touchdown pass.
“Now it is more of a NFL offense that throws the ball around,” Tayvion Robinson said. “He (Coen) has the kids’ best interests at heart.”
Tayvion Robinson said Coen started talking NFL and terminology immediately with him during his recruitment. He said a lot of recruiting pitches to him mention the NFL but Coen, a former offensive coach with the Los Angeles Rams, does run a pro-style offense similar to the Rams.
For the Virginia Tech transfer, he said there’s nothing more to want in an offense for a receiver than what Wan’Dale Robinson and Cooper Cupp have done.
“I am ready to play and be successful here,” Tayvion Robinson said.
