
Christian County will send six wrestlers to the semi-state round after a fourth place team finish Saturday at the Region I Meet at Caldwell County High School.
A.J. Harvey, ranked seventh in the state in the 285-pound classification, had the Colonels’ lone individual title. He defeated No. 10 Davis Pike of Union County for the title.
Harvey will take a 29-2 record into next week’s semi-state at Union County High School.
JaRi Campbell finished as region runner-up in the 113-pound class. Campbell, ranked third in the state, lost in the title match to Union County’s Jordyn Rainey, the top-ranked wrestler in the state.
Omarion Wimberly also captured a runner-up finish, knocking off two higher-ranked wrestlers on the way to the championship match where he fell to top-ranked Stephen Little of Union County.
Christian County had two wrestlers finish in third place. Ashton Smith claimed third at 106 and Mason Kellett was third at 150.
Eighth-grader Deameion Leavell finished fourth in the 132-pound class.
The top four finishers advance to the semi-state round, a combination of regions 1-4, where the top eight wrestlers advance to the state tournament.
The Colonels had a pair of wrestlers finish in fifth place – Tay Martinez at 120 and Jacob Newby at 157. They will be alternates and get to wrestle at semi-state if one of the four regional qualifiers is unable to go.
As a team, Christian County scored 143 points to finish in fourth place behind Union County, Paducah Tilghman, and Caldwell County. Union County won its 19th consecutive region title.
