Quit worrying about next year and enjoy this team

Why can’t we all just be happy? Kentucky  beat Florida 78-57 at Rupp Arena Saturday. The Cats are ranked in the top five in every poll. The Cats are battling for a 1 or 2 seed in the NCAA tournament but yet a certain population of BBN cannot be happy.

Scrolling Twitter after a Kentucky game has become unbearable even after a Kentucky win. Last year the negativity was expected. However one would think this year would be different.

The negativity spills onto the radio waves with postgame shows, weekly call-in shows and daily call-in shows. Perhaps those that understand the joy the fanbase should be feeling are just not as outspoken but dang I just don’t get it.

The conversation as to whether Shaedon Sharpe will play this year has evolved into will Shaedon Sharpe play next year. Opinions are tweeted and discussed more than the presence of Oscar Tschiebwe and the fact that he is one of the kindest souls to put on the Kentucky uniform.

There was lengthy discussions on Twitter as to why Shaedon Sharpe was not dancing with the team in the postgame video.  Seriously? It was stated he looked miserable and unattached. The person learned all this information from a 10-second video.

Personally, it doesn’t matter to me whether Sharpe plays next year or not. The emphasis being next year, not this year. This team is trending up more than any other college team in America and that is with Sharpe not playing. I will wait until this ride is over before I concern myself with next year.

As Elsa would say, “let it go.”

Some of the fans(?) are chastising John Calipari for letting Sharpe enroll with the chance that he will not play. These are the very people who wanted a veteran team but yet they choose to complain about a one-and-done who might not play one year.

It is probably time to give up on complaining about the checkerboard uniforms. Some will still voice their desdain and it has been years. The complaints have not worked and at some point we need to move forward.

The same goes for the UK logo. Just remember “it is what it is.” When the powers that be decide to change it, then it will be done.

Just remember the following:

— 2020-2021 9-16
— No NCAA tournament bid
— #8 SEC tournament/lost first game to Mississippi State
— Minimum crowds allowed
— Most painful offense ever in Calipari era

Fans need to be grateful for what is happening now, not what next year will bring. Live in the moment and relish the memories this team will be making in the upcoming weeks.

Don’t worry, be happy!

  1. I agree 100% with your article. I wrote a comment similar to your view not long ago. It was a article on will Sharpe play or not by Mr. Vaught. The amount of people that hate Cal is ridiculous. I have tried not to comment on what I think is going, but the elephant in the room needs addressed. It started to really get bad after the team kneeled at Florida last year. They probably should have kneeled every game because they came out and played their best game all year. You can say what you want about Cal, but he has done as much and more than most for this state. Every disaster he is there to help the people of Kentucky. He demands his players donate time to the sick or under privileged. The Ky. guys in the NBA are some of the best hearted people in the league. I feel like he had a hand in that.
As far as the players themselves, if you bad mouth them it is pathetic. They are just kids. They are not perfect and will make mistakes. Just like my kids and all of your kids.
If you can’t watch this team and be happy, you can’t be made happy.

  2. These days everyone has a podium, and many exercise that choice regardless of the wisdom of what is expressed – gotta get "their" opinion out there each opportunity. Nice column Tina Cox.

  3. Couldn’t agree more, Tina. All my life I have been a Kentucky fan, and all my life I have occasion to be embarrassed by a small segment of "fans" who always find fault with the coach, the players, the AD, the entire program. It’s a shame that this segment of the population can’t be pleased by anyone or anything. They must have a miserable life. Let’s just enjoy this team, the present, the here and now, and let it go. After all, we’re not promised tomorrow.

  4. I agree with all of this. Sometimes I get on just to fuss at folks that are energy vampires (they suck the life out of you).

Her’s how much I love these guys. I broke my back (and wrist in two places), and didn’t miss a home game. I learned a month ago that I would have to have surgery on my back. I have postponed my surgery to March 15 so I won’t miss home games and SEC games. I love this team – have since we met them at Women’s Clinic. Go Big Blue.

  5. If you really think about what Coach Cal has done this year, he should be in the conversation as coach of the year. As well as Oscar for player of the year. There will all ways be the negative spoilers, but I think the great Ky fans far out way the poor.
    Great article Tina👍
I love this team, and hope they can make a great run and win it all. But what ever happens, I will love them and remember them as one of the all time favorite Wildcat teams. Simply amazing, that Coach Cal put this together in less than a year.
GO CATS WE SUPPORT AND LOVE YOU!!!

  6. You sound like my mom. "They are just kids"
It’s different today. Coach pushes these players so hard they end up getting injured.
Alot of these players are still growing, and being pushed for a draft ranking in the NBA.
Which stinks imo. KY fans have to live with it and quite frankly alot do not care anymore. They can win it all and still won’t catch UCLA. Players first program is all about cash and he’s got teo in the NBA raking in millions off Chinese slave labor camps, but hey who cares about that, right?

  7. BE HAPPY AND CONTENT WITH WHAT WE HAVE!
THESE YOUNG MEN ARE UNDER SO MUCH PRESSURE TO PEFORM ON THE BIG STAGE .
IT IS NOT ABOUT “WINS AND LOSES ALL THE TIME.
GRADES, COMMUNICATION SKILLS (YES SIR,NO MA’AM), COMMUNITY SERVICE BEING
POLITE TO OTHERS AND THE LIST GOES ON.
    NEED I SAY MORE😀
