Lyon County’s girls wrapped up a winning record Thursday night, holding off Paducah Tilghman 69-60 at Jason White Gymnasium in Eddyville.
Tilghman was within 59-57 with just over a minute left in the contest. Lyon went up 60-57 when Rose Smith made the second of two free throws with 35 seconds to go.
Lyon then put the game away at the charity stripe, after a brief tussle for a rebound resulted on a foul on Tilghman. A pair of technical fouls were also assessed to the Lady Tornado, giving the Lady Lyons six free throw attempts with 24 seconds to play.
Ella Defew made five of those six shots as part of a game-high 20-point performance. That turned the three-point margin into a 65-57 advantage, and Lyon went on to claim the nine-point triumph.
Calista Collins added 15 points and Rose Smith had 13 for the Lady Lyons, who will carry a 15-13 record into postseason play.
Kiarra Jackson had 15 points to lead four Tilghman players in double figures. Diamond Gray added 13, Dasia Garland 12 and Rosie Minter 10.
The Lady Tornado was just 6 of 18 at the free throw line while Lyon was 20 of 39.
Lyon led 32-22 at halftime before Tilghman came back to tie things after three quarters at 41-41.
