
An outstanding senior season that his seen him break his school’s single-game scoring record — twice! — has resulted in Caldwell County’s Jabrion Spikes being named the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches 2nd Region Player of the Year.
The Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation and the KABC announced their top region players and candidates for Kentucky’s 2022 Mr. and Miss Basketball awards Friday morning.
Spikes leads the region in both scoring and rebounding this season, at 30.6 points and 12.1 boards a night.
He is third in the state in scoring and seventh in rebounding.
Spikes has helped the Tigers to a 17-10 record heading into the regular-season finale at home on Friday against Crittenden County.
Spikes set the school record with 51 points in a win at Dawson Springs on Jan. 10. He bettered his own mark Feb. 15 when he poured in 59 in a setback at Hopkinsville.
Spikes has 1,370 career points and is seventh on Caldwell’s career scoring list. He is 39 points away from moving into sixth.
Spikes is the first Caldwell winner of the boys’ 2nd Region Player of the Year since Matt Fraliex in 2007. Fraliex, Caldwell’s all-time leading scorer with 2,941, is currently the head coach of the Todd County Central girls’ basketball team.
Spikes is now a candidate for Mr. Basketball, with voting underway for that award. The male and female with the most votes will be named Mr. and Miss Kentucky Basketball during the Mr. and Miss Kentucky Basketball Awards Ceremony on Sunday, March 20, at the Lexington Griffin Gate Marriott Resort.
The 11th Annual Mr. and Miss Kentucky Basketball Awards Ceremony serves as a fundraiser for the Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation, which has announced Mr. Kentucky Basketball since 1954 and Miss Kentucky Basketball since 1976.
