
Lots of teams talk about being young, but few are counting on underclassmen and middle schoolers to carry the program forward to the extent the Trigg County Lady Wildcats are in 2022.
If Tuesday’s 11-0 win over visiting UHA is any indication, the Lady Wildcats are in good shape this year and for seasons to come.
Trigg wins its opener ahead of a trip to Dawson Springs on Thursday. The Lady Blazers slip to 0-1 and will hit the road to Elkton on Thursday to face Todd County Central.
Leading 1-0 in the 2nd, Trigg County used a two-out rally to double the advantage on an RBI single by Lillie Cortner.
The Lady Blazers put runners at the corners with two outs in the 3rd, but Trigg pitcher Avery Wade coaxed a fly-out to end the inning.
7th-grader Madilynn Smith singled home a run for a 3-0 score in the bottom of the 3rd before the Lady Wildcats blew the game open in the 4th.
Rylee Hendricks blasted a 3-run home run over the left-field fence to double the margin. 7th-grader Livi Breckel followed with a double and came home on Smith’s second RBi single. Junior Audrey Alexander, Trigg’s lone upperclassman, reached on an error to plate Smith for an 8-0 lead.
A single and two walks loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 5th, and Breckel’s single brought in the final runs for the mercy rule victory.
Wade went the distance in the circle for Trigg, scattering three hits with six strikeouts and four walks.
Mallory Ladd took the loss for the Lady Blazers, allowing 12 hits and nine earned runs over four innings.
Breckel and MaKenna Hendricks each had three hits for the Lady Wildcats, with Breckel also driving in two and scoring twice. Smith was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI and Rylee Hendricks drove in three runs. Wade hit safely twice and Cortner had a hit and an RBI.
Regan Pollard was 2 for 2 for UHA, with Krista Keller collecting the Lady Blazers’ other hit.
