Izzy Housden did a little bit of everything Thursday to rally the host Calloway County High School softball team past Lyon County in a 2-1 squeaker. Housden, who struck out 11 and earned a complete-game win, also tied the game with an RBI double and scored the eventual game-winning run in the fifth inning.

The Lyons took control of the contest in the top of the third when Lilly Perry grounded into a two-out fielder’s choice that scored Emma Brasher and gave LCHS a 1-0 advantage. With Perry cruising in the circle, it appeared Lyon County was poised to hand the Lady Lakers their first loss of the season.

After the Lyons (2-2) stranded a pair of runners in the top half of the fifth inning, however, Preslee Phillips was hit by a pitch to start the bottom half and came around to score when Housden’s one-out double to left squared the score at 1-all. With two outs, Calloway went ahead for good after Bailee Grogan stroked a run-scoring single to center, giving Grogan her first RBI of the year.

Housden (3-0) was sensational in the Laker circle, giving up just two hits and three walks during seven innings of duty, and staying unbeaten on the season by retiring six of the final seven batters she faced. Perry (2-1) was equally strong but took her first loss of 2022 by allowing five hits, two walks, and two runs in six innings. Perry did fan a half dozen, giving her 18 in 27 innings pitched this season.

Lyon County was held to just two hits in the loss — doubles by Hadlie Butler and Jenna Coursey. Calista Collins reached base twice after drawing a pair of walks. Housden and Grogan both went 2-for-3 for Calloway County.
