The Christian County Colonels took a big early lead and then had to hold off a late-game rally by Trigg County Saturday to take a 10-7 at Colonel Field. The win was the 8th straight for the Colonels to open the 2022 baseball season.
As they have several times this season, the Colonels got things going early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The damage was done when Hayden Hunt emptied the bases with a bases-loaded hit to put the Colonels into the lead.
Trigg County responded in the top of the second, taking advantage of an error and two walks to score a pair of runs to cut the lead to 3-2. The big hit in the inning was an RBI single from Aidon Butts.
Christian County appeared to take a firm grip on the game in the bottom of the second as the Colonels scored five times to go up 8-2. Preston Phan had a two-run single and Josh Snorton scorched a two-run blast over the left field fence during the inning.
When Elijah Underhill drove in a run in the bottom of the third with a sac fly the Colonels led 9-2 and appeared to be rolling.
But give the Wildcats credit, they would not go quite that easy Saturday. In the top of the 6th, the Wildcats loaded the bases with a Christian County error and two singles. Kaiden McCormick drove in a run with a single. Stephen Audas then cleared the bases with a grand slam to center, and suddenly the lead was down to 9-7.
Christian County got a little insurance in the bottom half of the inning when Elijah Underhill reached base on a single, stole second and third, and then scored on a wild pitch.
Preston Phan then got the Wildcats to go quietly in the top of the 7th to seal the win.
Josh Snorton had another big game for the Colonels, going 2-3 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs. Preston Phan ended up 1-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Hayden Hunt was 1-3 with a double and 3 RBIs.
Stephen Audas was 2-4 for the Wildcats with the grand slam, 4 RBIs, and a run scored. Kaiden McCormick finished 3-4 with an RBI. Jay Humphries went 2-4 with a run scored.
Lane Gamble got the win for the Colonels going 5 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs, just two of them earned, on ten hits, while striking out five and walking four.
