Despite a late-inning rally, the Todd County Central softball team saw a four-game win streak come to an end and dropped its 13th-District opener with a 6-4 loss to visiting Russellville on Tuesday.
The Lady Rebels slip to 6-2 and head to Kenwood, TN on Thursday, before a 4th-Region All-A tournament semifinal matchup with Monroe County on Saturday.
A’miyah Collier and Russellville were in control through five frames, leading 6-0 behind four home runs. Collier crushed two, and Akiah Bell and Jaylah Kees each added a solo shot, while Collier was lights out in the circle.
However, the Lady Rebels benefitted from the long ball as well. After managing a single hit in their first five at-bats, a walk and a Sam Case single set the table for a three-run Abigail McPherson blast to cut the lead in half. Naomi Gammon added an RBI single, and the score was 6-4 with an inning to play.
McPherson sat Russellville down in order in the top of the 7th, and her two-out single brought the winning run to the plate with one out in the Lady Rebels’ final at-bat. But Collier came through with a strikeout and coaxed a groundout to hold off the comeback.
Russellville improves to 5-2 and 1-0 in district play, led by Collier’s two RBI and four-hit, 13 strikeout performance in the circle.
McPherson went the distance for the Lady Rebels, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
