Early in the 2022 baseball season, Lyon County has shown the ability to put crooked numbers on the scoreboard. The Lyons needed a few of them Tuesday as they rallied from an 11-2 deficit to hand district rival Crittenden County a 15-11 loss in Eddyville.
Lyon County scored multiple runs in the first, third, fourth, and fifth innings to improve to 7-0.
But an opportunistic Rocket squad took advantage of four hits, two walks, a hit batter, and a key error to jump ahead 6-0 in their first at bat.
Lyon answered with solo home runs from Gunnar Bingham and Brody Williams in the home half of the first.
Crittenden County plated five more runs in the third inning thanks to three walks, a Lyon error, and a three-run triple by Maddux Carlson.
Not to be deterred, Lyon came back with four runs in their at bat on four singles and an error.
For the second straight night, Lyon coach Ricky Baker had a freshman relief pitcher shut the door on the opponent. Monday, it was John Bingham in a 6-5 win over Murray. Tuesday, it was Ricky’s son Eli. He went just shy of five innings on the mound and allowed just one hit and no runs. He struck out three, including two in the final inning.
With Crittenden’s scoring done for the night, the Lyons scored three runs in the fourth inning and took the lead for good with a five-run fifth. Jackson Shoulders doubled to left to drive in a run and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Austin Spears knocked in the go-ahead run with a double. Spears finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Gunnar Bingham had three of Lyon’s 13 hits with Williams and Turner Hurst each adding a pair of hits as seven Lyons drove in runs.
Crittenden only managed five hits but took advantage of eight walks and two hit batters. In addition to Carlson’s triple, Jeremiah Foster added a double for the Rockets (2-4, 0-2).
Lyon County gets its first region litmus test Thursday with a road game at Henderson County — the team they beat for the region championship last year.
