A trip “south of the border” Saturday ended up in a split for the Trigg County Wildcats. Trigg County dropped a 5-1 decision to Ripley High School but then rebounded with a solid 10-0 five-inning win over host Dyersburg High School.

In the opening game of the day, Ripley scored two runs on a double and two more on a Wildcat error in the top of the tenth inning as they outlasted the Wildcats 5-1. The two teams had battled through nine-inning with neither able to score more than a single run.

Ripley took advantage of a Trigg County error to score their run in the top of the 6th and take a 1-0 lead.

Trigg County came right back in the bottom of the inning to even things up. Matthew Leeper reached base on a walk to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a sacrifice and then would score thanks to a Ripley error.

Trigg County was limited to four hits in the game. Leeper, Isaac Peca, Mac McCormick, and Jacob Hunter had one hit each.

Isaac Peca had a super day on the mound for Trigg County. Peca started and went eight innings, giving up just one unearned run on six hits, striking out three, and walking three. Dallas Ahart was tagged with the loss, going two innings, giving up four runs, just two of them earned, on two hits, striking out two, and walking two.

The Wildcats rebounded in impressive fashion in their second game of the day. Aaron Despain pitched a five-inning three-hitter as Trigg County rolled to a 10-0 win over the Dyersburg Trojans.

Despain gave up all three singles in the fourth inning but managed to get out of a two-out jam by inducing Jordan Williamson to fly out to end the inning.

The Wildcat offense was rolling from the very beginning. Trigg scored in each inning of the game with two in the first, one in the second and third, two more in the fourth, and then four in the fifth to wind up the game.

Tyler Ahart had a big game for the Wildcats going 2-4 with a double, an RBI, and three runs scored. Isaac Peca was 1-3 with three RBIs. Mac McCormick ended the game 2-4 with an RBI.

In picking up the win, Aaron Despain struck out five while walking only one.

With the split, Trigg County now stands at 4-9 for the season. The Wildcats are slated to get back to action Monday on the road at Marshall County.
