Lyons Use Three Jacks to Three-Peat as District Kings

Four years ago, Lyon County lost a district semifinal baseball game to Trigg County on a walk-off grand slam.  They haven’t lost a district tournament game since.

Lyon went deep three more times Tuesday to back the pitching of Jackson Shoulders as the Lyons beat Trigg 12-0 for the school’s third straight district title.

Shoulders allowed just four hits in five innings while walking just one and striking out 10 in improving to 7-1 on the mound. He lowered his season ERA to 0.72.

The Lyons took care of business at the plate with five runs in the first inning, highlighted by RBI doubles by Brody Williams and Austin Spears. A solo home run by Spears in the second inning would boost the Lyon County lead to 7-0.

Trigg County threatened to get on the scoreboard in the third inning when Jay Humphries laced a one-out double. But Shoulders would strand him in scoring position by getting the next two outs.

In the fourth inning, Eli Baker smacked a two-run homer and Peyton Williams followed with his third longball in two days — a solo shot — to move the lead to 12-0. Williams finished with two hits and three RBI.

Older brother Brody along with Gunnar Bingham and Spears each had two hits for the Lyons, who improve to 26-6.

Humphries had two of Trigg County’s four hits as the Wildcats see their four-game winning streak snapped. The loss also ended Trigg’s streak of six straight wins in the district title game dating back 12 years.

At 13-18, the Wildcats will play Christian County, Henderson County, or Caldwell County in this weekend’s region tournament in Hopkinsville.  Lyon County’s first-round opponent will be Hopkinsville, Union County, or Madisonville.
