Speed means a lot in the Southeastern Conference and fast playmakers are a must for elite teams.

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops and associate coach Vince Marrow have done a terrific job upgrading the speed of the UK football team and will be getting another boost next season from freshman receiver Barion Brown of Nashville.

The 6-2, 175-pound Brown won the 100-meter dash in 10.83 seconds, 200 in 21.70 seconds and 400 in 49.32 seconds at the Tennessee Class A state track meet this week. He also anchored the winning 800 relay team.

That brought his state championship total to eight — three relays, two in the 100 and 200, and one in the 400 — for the Tennessee Titans Class 4A Mr. Football winner.

He had 25 catches for 372 yards with four touchdowns and ran for 756 yards on 62 carries with seven touchdowns last season. He was ranked as the nation’s No. 9 receiver by 247Sports and the nation’s 68th best overall prospect.

Third in the 100 dash was another Nashville receiver, Shamar Porter. He finished in 11.02 seconds and like Brown is a Kentucky commit. The junior committed in January after having 29 catches for 446 yards and six touchdowns in 2021 before an injury ended his season before the playoffs.
