After a trip to the state tennis tournament as a doubles partner, Hopkinsville’s Sophie Maddux advanced in the singles competition last year. She lost to North Oldham’s Lilah Shallcross in straight sets.
Advancing as a region champion didn’t help Maddux when it came to the blind draw to determine a first-round opponent. Once again, it was Shallcross.
Now playing for Sacred Heart Academy in Louisville, Shallcross entered the state tournament as a top-eight seed and defeated Maddux 6-1, 6-0 Tuesday in the at the KHSAA Girls’ State Tennis Tournament presented by UK Healthcare.
While Maddux lost in straight sets, she was able to extend the points thanks to a strong volley game. The match lasted just over an hour.
Shallcross, who advanced to the round of 8 last year, moved into the round of 16 again Tuesday.
For Maddux, a high school career that saw her advance to the state tournament three times will now continue at the college level at Centre College.
