SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE – Jacob Wease

If Jacob Wease has a senior season like last year, he will own Trigg County High School football records that were thought to be unbreakable twenty years ago.

The senior quarterback threw for 2,154 yards last season, joining Dan Moser as the only Wildcat to throw for over 2,000 yards in a season.

He enters the 2022 season fifth on the all-time passing yards list with 3,741 yards. He is likely to pass Marty Jaggers (3,802) in the season opener. Luke McKenzie (4,328) and Cam Jordan (4,400) could be passed by the midpoint of the season.

That would only leave Dan Moser and his 5,511 yards standing in Wease’s way of topping the list. Moser was the beneficiary of a Curtis Higgins offense that saw him put the ball in the air over 30 times a game. When he graduated in 2001, Moser also held the school record for completions (332), attempts (667), and touchdowns (56).

With another solid season, Wease will surpass each of those marks.

It’s been an interesting journey for Wease, who put up his numbers in two seasons with two different coaches. He is hoping a second season under head coach Chris Ezell produces the same results as last year.

Wease said he hit the weight room in the offseason which has resulted in a deeper throw. He also has several of his main targets returning at receiver which should help him in his quest to enter the Wildcat record book.

Wease said he has gotten some interest from colleges and will make a decision after the 2022 season. He is hoping a season like 2021 will stir more interest by the season’s end.
