A lightning delay provided the bookends for University Heights Academy’s season opener Monday at Calloway County. In the end, Harlee Davis provided the only goal for a 1-0 Lady Laker win that was called early in the second half due to continued lightning in the Murray area.
The 2022 opener for both teams began 45 minutes later than scheduled due to lightning. Once the match got underway, both teams had opportunities early to dent the scoreboard first but were unable to get a solid shot off.
Calloway thought they scored the first goal of the match at the 17:40 mark but it was nullified due to an offsides call. However, the Lady Lakers would answer less than three minutes later when Josey McManus found Harlee Davis on the left side. Davis would use her left foot to find the right side of the net for the game’s first goal.
Each team had six shots in the first half, but Calloway held on to the 1-0 lead at the break.
Six minutes into the second half, play was halted due to a second lightning delay. This time, the lightning remained in the area for nearly 40 minutes and both coaches agreed to call the game, giving the Lady Lakers the 1-0 win.
