The Todd County Central girls’ soccer team was less than three minutes away from the first victory over Logan County in five seasons on Tuesday. However, a late goal in regulation and a double-overtime strike gave the host Lady Cougars a 2-1 13th-District victory.
The Lady Rebels slip to 0-2, 0-1 in district play, ahead of a trip to Cadiz on Thursday to face the Trigg County Lady Wildcats.
Both teams hit the post in the first half, but neither could find the back of the net over the opening forty minutes. The Lady Rebels recorded four shots on goal, and Darby Delph made three saves to keep the game scoreless.
The Lady Cougars held a five to two edge in shots after the break, but the Lady Rebels found the breakthrough when Melanie Chamberlaine dropped a shot behind Logan County goalkeeper Elana Edler that bounced into the open net.
However, the advantage was short-lived. A foul in the Todd Central box gave the Lady Cougars a penalty kick, and Maria Rogers was on target from 12 yards to even the match with just over two minutes to play.
With it being a district matchup, the teams went to two five-minute overtimes. Just a minute into extra time, Logan County again earned a penalty kick, but this time Rogers’ effort to the middle of the goal was saved by Delph.
But Rogers would get a second chance, taking the opening kickoff of the second overtime and working her way through the Lady Rebel defense to score from close range, giving the Lady Cougars their thirteenth straight win in the series.
Chamberlaine’s goal was her first of the season, and Delph finished with 14 saves. Todd Central played the match without last season’s leading scorer, senior Madison Henderson.
