Just as they did in last season’s inaugural 2A Section 1 boys’ soccer tournament, the Trigg County Wildcats and Webster County Trojans met in Monday’s opener in Cadiz.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the outcome was also the same after the Trojans scored the lone goal in the second half to win 2-1 and move into Thursday’s semifinal at Calloway County.
The Wildcats had barely broken a sweat before finding themselves trailing on the scoreboard. With just two minutes played, Webster’s Evan DeLamar ran onto a long ball from Rodrigo Jimenez and poked it under Trigg goalkeeper Riley West for a 1-0 score.
However, the Wildcats answered when Marlee Reeves got behind the Trojan defense and was chopped down from behind to earn a penalty kick. Senior Timmy Cannon stepped up to the spot and found the back of the net to the goalkeeper’s right to tie things up with eleven minutes left in the half.
Despite being outshot 10-2 over the first forty minutes, the Wildcats appeared to have momentum after the break. But it disappeared after nine minutes when West couldn’t hold on to Cade Howell’s shot, and Manuel Salinas tapped into an empty net.
West was busy with 16 saves in goal for the Wildcats. Webster County’s Jesus Martinez was between the posts in the first half, and DeLamar took over after the break.
Trigg threw everyone forward chasing the equalizer, but slipped to its sixth straight defeat ahead of a visit from Christian County on Wednesday.
