In a Friday night battle of the Colonels, Henderson County jumped on Christian County early to build a big halftime lead and cruised through an abbreviated 2nd half on the way to a 43-14 victory at the Stadium of Champions.
Just as they did a week ago in a loss to Logan County, Christian County struggled to contain the run game and trailed 14-0 after the 1st quarter. Henderson’s Jordan Wright scored the opening touchdown on a 30-yard run, and after an interception by Jaheim Williams, Wright was back in the endzone on a 22-yard run in the final seconds of the quarter.
After a 21-yard scoring run by Williams, Henderson added a special teams touchdown when Luke Dalton blocked a Christian County punt and recovered in the endzone for a 28-0 lead in the 2nd quarter.
Henderson capped the half with a 5-yard scoring plunge from Dru Meadows and added the 2-point conversion to ensure a running clock in the 2nd half.
Wright put a bow on his big night when he took the opening kickoff 83 yards to the house for a 43-0 score. However, on Henderson’s next possession Cyrus Greenwade came up with an interception to set up Christian County on the 15-yard line.
The home-standing Colonels came up empty on that possession but finally got on the scoreboard after Jaden Reaves’ pick gave them the ball near midfield. Daemeion Leavell, in at quarterback for the banged-up Jordan Miles, hit Elijah Underhill on 1st down, and he motored 49 yards for the touchdown.
With the final seconds ticking away, Christian County’s Prince Northington took a pass from Leavell and found his way to the endzone from 44 yards out for the final points of the night.
Henderson racked up 381 yards of offense, 308 on the ground, and 73 through the air. Wright led the way with 146 yards on 12 carries, Trajdon Davis rushed seven times for 71 yards, and Williams totaled 47 yards on three tries.
Christian County was held to -12 yards rushing. Miles threw for 37 yards in the 1st half, and Leavell passed for 133 yards and two scores over the final two quarters.
Next for Christian County (1-2) is a trip to Madisonville-North Hopkins on Friday. The Maroons improved to 2-1 with a 27-point win at Crittenden County.
Henderson will put its 2-0 record on the line at Boyle County next week.
