Union County Dominates Caldwell to Improve to 5-0

Union County dealt Caldwell County its first shutout loss in 12 years Friday night.

The Braves rolled up 450 yards of offense while routing the Tigers 47-0 on Homecoming night at Baker Field at Union County High School.

Union, now 5-0, led 21-0 after one quarter and 41-0 at halftime in a dominating effort that ended an 11-game losing streak to Caldwell.

Kristopher Hughes ran for 113 yards and two scores for Union while Duncan Mills had 93 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Mills also caught a 14-yard scoring pass from Cannon Sheffer.

Sheffer finished the night 7 of 8 passing for 127 yards and two touchdowns.

Union had 271 yards rushing in the contest and 19 first downs.

Meanwhile, Caldwell was held to just one first down in the first half and finished the night with four first downs.

The Tigers had 103 total yards, with 57 of that coming on the ground.

Union’s last win over Caldwell had been in the 2010 season.

The last time the Tigers were blanked was Oct. 29, 2010, in a 49-0 loss to Mayfield.

Caldwell is 0-5 for the first time since 1999. The Tigers won their next two games that season but finished the year 2-8.

Hughes scored on a 3-yard run just 2:33 into the contest and Mills had two first-quarter TDs to help Union go up 21-0 after 12 minutes.

Willem McPeake scored on a 12-yard run early in the second quarter while Brock Cullen caught a 27-yard TD pass and Hughes scored on a 4-yard run to make it 41-0 at halftime.

Amare Black scored on a 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter to account for the only scoring of the second half.

Caldwell will host Ballard Memorial for a Class 2A 1st District matchup next week. The Bombers are 0-5 after falling to Hopkins County Central 49-14 on Friday.

Union visits Crittenden County next Friday.
