For the second time in two matches in the 13th-District tournament at Franklin-Simpson, the Todd County Central girls’ soccer team made a single goal stand up on Tuesday to knock off Logan County and claim the program’s first district title since 2017.
The Lady Rebels had the best scoring chances of the 1st half, with Ciara Collins seeing a pair of shots from inside the Logan County 18-yard box saved. With just under ten minutes until halftime, Collins broke through the Lady Cougar defense but fired straight at the goalkeeper and the teams went to the break tied.
Collins continued to provide a scoring threat, again getting behind the defense in the 46th minute before Logan goalkeeper Elana Edler came out to smother her shot.
The Lady Rebels piled on the pressure with a string of corner kicks, and they finally found the breakthrough when Madison Henderson took a short pass from Collins and scored from close range with 25 minutes left to play.
Logan County had a pair of chances to tie the game, but Darby Delph saved Lily Bibb’s shot from the middle of the box in the 63rd minute, and a shot headed for the net was blocked by Lady Rebel defender Lourdes Anastacio with just five minutes left on the clock.
Delph made four saves to earn the Lady Rebels’ seventh shutout of the season. Todd Central finished the match with nine shots on goal.
The Lady Rebels avenged a loss to the Lady Cougars in last year’s final to improve to 11-7-2 ahead of next week’s 4th-Region tournament.
