The South Warren Spartans extended their all-time winning streak against the Christian County Colonels Friday night. The Spartans hit the Colonels with an early scoring blitz and rolled on to a 52-14 win in Bowling Green.
The win improved the Spartans to 7-0 all-time against the Colonels, with the closest of those being their first meeting back in 2017 when South Warren picked up a 24-6 win.
The game started off just about as bad as it could for the Colonels. After going three plays and out on their opening series, the Colonels saw South Warren take just three plays to go 47 yards. Quarterback Bryce Button capped off the drive with a 24-yard run to put the Spartans up 7-0.
The tough start snowballed for the Christian County Colonels on the next possession as they fumbled it away on the first play of the series. Three plays later Jimmy Sales ran it in from 5 yards out and, with the two-point conversion, the lead grew to 15-0.
The Colonel offense continued to struggle on the next possession, again going three and out. The Spartans took just three plays to score on a 46-yard drive, the touchdown coming on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Button, and the lead was at 22-0 with just over five minutes to go in the first quarter.
The Colonel offense had some success on the next possession but could not sustain it. South Warren got the ball back and drove down the field, capping off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run from DeShawn Bridges as the lead grew to 29-0 with 10:49 to go in the half.
One of the highlights of the night for Christian County came on the ensuing possession for the Colonels. Jordan Miles connected with Prince Northington for a 65-yard touchdown that cut the South Warren lead to 29-7.
The Spartans then took the kickoff and drove right down the field. South Warren would connect for a 10-yard touchdown pass on fourth down that pushed the lead back out to 36-7.
Two plays after the score, the Colonels fumbled the ball back to South Warren at the Spartans’ 32-yard line. The Spartans drove the ball down the field but the drive was short-circuited by a couple of penalties against South Warren. They salvaged a drive with a field goal to make the score 39-7.
After a holding call on the kickoff, the Colonels were backed up inside their 10-yard line. On the next play, Jordan Miles was picked off at the 22-yard line and the Spartans ran it all the way back to make it 45-7 with 35 seconds left in the half.
The second half played out fairly quickly as the half began with the running clock due to the 38-point margin.
The Colonels did have another highlight moment in the second half when Jordan Miles found Elijah Underhill wide open going down the left hash and hit him for a 78-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter to cut the lead to 45-14.
South Warren reserves would add a late score to reach the final of 52-14.
The Colonels fall to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in district play. The Colonels will host Bowling Green next week at the Stadium of Champions.
