Trigg County senior Austin Cavanaugh became one of only three Wildcat runners to win three consecutive cross-country region titles after he ran away from the field on Saturday at the KHSAA Region 1 Class 2A meet at Marshall County High School.
Cavanaugh’s history-making performance helped the Wildcats to a 2nd-place team finish with a score of 62, one point ahead of Calloway County. Webster County finished in 1st place, with Layton Wagoner and Garrett West rounding out the top three.
Cavanaugh posted a time of 16:23.69 to join only Sam “Fox” Love and Lynus “Fly” Wright in the Trigg County record book. With three top-10 state finishes under his belt, Cavanaugh will be looking to help the Wildcats improve on two consecutive 8th-place finishes next weekend at Bourbon County.
Also making the trip to the state meet, David Cavanaugh finished 11th with a time of 18:22.93. Riley Thompson was close behind in 13th with an 18:46.16.
Levi Watts ran a 19:51.56 to finish 18th, and Matthew Reeves was four seconds back in 19th. Travis Cavanaugh came in 21st with a 20:00.87.
