Caldwell County grad Derrin Boyd has immediately stepped into a starting role at Lipscomb University.
Boyd had 16 points in his first home game with the Bisons on Saturday, helping Lipscomb run past Campbellsville Harrodsburg 107-54 at Allen Arena in Nashville.
The 6-foot-3 guard was 6 of 7 from the floor in 23 minutes of action. He made all four of his attempts from behind the arc, including a long 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer that sent the Bisons to the break with a 53-21 advantage.
Boyd also grabbed five rebounds in the win for Lipscomb, which is now 1-1.
The former Caldwell Tiger standout was also in the starting lineup Wednesday night for Lipscomb’s season opener at the University of South Dakota.
Lipscomb led by as much as 15 points in the first half, and took a 42-35 lead to halftime.
But the Coyotes used a strong final 10 minutes of the contest to rally for an 85-77 victory over the Bisons.
Boyd had eight points in 33 minutes of action. He was 3 of 7 from the field and made both of his free throw attempts in his first game at Lipscomb.
Boyd played two seasons at Georgetown College before transferring to Lipscomb. He scored 945 points in two seasons of action at Georgetown while grabbing 256 rebounds, dishing out 149 assists and recording 55 steals.
He started 55 of the 57 games in which he appeared.
Georgetown went 41-16 the past two seasons.
Because of the extra year provided college athletes because of Covid, Boyd is a sophomore at Lipscomb.
At Caldwell, Boyd finished fourth on the Tigers’ career scoring list with 1,911 points. He is also fifth on Caldwell’s all-time rebounding list with 628 boards.
Boyd is the second former Tiger to go on and play for the Lipscomb Bisons.
Eli Pepper was a four-year starter at Lipscomb from 2015-19, leaving as the school’s all-time leading rebounder in the NCAA era with 1,016. He also scored 923 points.
Lipscomb will next host Belmont for the Battle of the Boulevard on Monday at 7 p.m.
