Muhlenberg County made almost three times as many free throws as visiting Trigg County attempted on Monday, helping the Lady Mustangs hold off the Lady Wildcats 56-48.
The Lady Mustangs finished 29 of 40 from the line, including 14 of 16 attempts in the fourth quarter, to pick up their third straight victory.
Muhlenberg doubled up Trigg in the first quarter behind five points for Aven Proffit, with Olivia Noffsinger’s five points providing almost all the offense for the Lady Wildcats.
Both teams posted 12 points in the second quarter, and Muhlenberg led 26-19 at the halftime break.
Noffsinger doubled her total with five more points in the third, and Audrey Alexander added five for the Lady Wildcats. Trigg outscored Muhlenberg 15-12 and was within four points with a quarter to play.
But the Lady Mustangs sealed the game at the line, scoring all but four of their final 18 points on freebies. Brooklyn Stewart was five for six to finish with a team-high 20, and Sarah-Cate Boggess was perfect on eight attempts down the stretch.
Noffsinger scored eight in the fourth to finish with a game-high 21. The Lady Wildcats finished the game 6 of 11 from the free-throw line.
The loss is the second straight for Trigg County. The Lady Wildcats will travel to Panama City Beach, Florida after Christmas to play in the Marlin Classic.
