Woodford County football coach Dennis Johnson was not surprised by what he saw when he started watching film of Frederick Douglass before the two teams met last month in the Class 5A playoffs.

“I was watching video and one number just kept jumping out. No. 13 is a difference maker,” said Johnson.

No. 13 is safety-running back Ty Bryant, the recent winner of the Paul Hornung Award given to the state’s top player by the Louisville Quarterback Club. He will sign with Kentucky Wednesday when the national signing period opens.

“I have known Ty for a long time,” Johnson, a former all-SEC defensive end at Kentucky who played in the NFL, said. “It’s great for him to be a legacy (his father, Cisco, was a receiver at UK for coach Jerry Claiborne) recruit. It just means a little more. I have great respect for their family and how they raised Ty.”

Frederick Douglass eliminated Woodford in the playoffs and went on to win the state title. Johnson said Bryant took over the game in the second half when he played running back as well as safety and ran for over 100 yards and one score.

“We knew he could run and hit. He is just a phenomenal athlete,” Johnson said. “He was the best player on the field. He was the difference in our game but also when they beat Owensboro and in the championship game. That’s what a Paul Hornung Award winner does.

Johnson is glad to see Bryant heading to Kentucky to play for coach Mark Stoops.

“Every time I see Ty he is himself,” Johnson, a former Paul Hornung Award winner, said. “I have great respect for him. He has a 4.3 GPA. That just adds to his character.

“I am looking forward to Ty being a great asset at Kentucky. I was super happy when he committed (to UK). I think he will have a lot of success because he knows the right way to play and he definitely was the best player in Kentucky this year.”
