Vanderbilt has turned to a proven winner to lead its volleyball program that was abandoned in 1980 after just a two-year existence.

Vanderbilt has hired Kentucky associate head coach Anders Nelson who announced Friday he would become Vandy’s coach. The Commodores will begin play in the fall of 2025.

Nelson has been at Kentucky for 11 seasons, including UK’s national championship season two years ago and six straight Southeastern Conference championships. He primarily works with middle blockers and served as UK’s defensive coordinator and camp coordinator and scouting among other duties.

“We are excited for Anders and this opportunity. He’s earned the chance to run a program. He’s been a big part of our success here at Kentucky and we will miss him,” Kentucky coach Craig Skinner said. “At the same time it’s a credit to this program that continues to help people grow and create opportunities. We wish him nothing but the best!”

Nelson was a terrific recruiter and helped UK sign the No. 1 class in 2019 and five top 10 classes, including the current recruiting class. Numerous recruits I’ve talked to over the years always talked about him and his influence on the program and them.

“Today is an incredibly bittersweet day for me. I am thrilled to begin a new chapter of my life by accepting the head coaching position at Vanderbilt. However, as with any decision like this, I am leaving behind a special group of people and a great volleyball program at Kentucky,” Nelson said.

“Kentucky volleyball has meant more to me than I can say. I sincerely love this program and all of those who are associated with it. My experience is proof that if you pour your heart into this program, it will reward you back.”

He thanked Skinner, athletics director Mitch Barnhart and UK players who challenged him daily to become a better coach.
