The Covington Holy Cross Indians learned the lesson Tuesday evening that many teams across the western end of the state have learned over the past couple of years as it comes to taking on the Lyon County Lyons. That lesson being that you had better be ready to play for all 32 minutes or you might blink and be out of the game.
Holy Cross stayed right with the Lyons for the first sixteen minutes of their opening round game of the White, Greer & Maggard Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic. Problem for the Indians was that there were still sixteen more minutes to play.
Lyon County shot nearly 56 percent in the second half while holding Covington Holy Cross under 40 percent shooting in that same time frame as the Lyons pulled away to a 95-79 win.
Both teams had their offenses in high gear in the opening half. The Indians led 27-24 at the end of the first quarter. The Lyons used a big finish to the second quarter to take a 50-47 lead into the break. Three-point shooting was a big story for the Lyons in the first half as they knocked down 7 of 15 from behind the arc.
The Lyon County offense kept up the point production in the third quarter. Lyon County would put up 27 more in the quarter as they extended the lead to 77-68 going into the final eight minutes of the game.
The Lyons’ defense then clamped down on Holy Cross as Lyon County began to pull away in the fourth quarter. The Lyons would lead by as many as 19 points before settling in for the 16-point win.
The ‘Three Amigos’ came up huge for the Lyons. Brady Shoulders led the way with 31 points and 18 rebounds. Travis Perry just missed a triple-double for Lyon County. Perry finished the game with 27 points, 20 of them in the opening half, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists. Jack Reddick added 27 points for the Lyons.
With his 27 points, Perry now has 3,576 for his career. He passed Harry Todd (3,567) for 4th place on the all-time scoring list. He now stands just 11 points behind Cameron Justice, who is in third place on the scoring list.
As big as those nights were, they were topped by Holy Cross’ Jacob Meyer, who led all scorers with 49 points and 5 rebounds.
One of the big numbers on the night was rebounding, where the Lyons outrebounded the Indians 45-35.
Lyon County improves to 10-3 with the win.
