The Lyon County Lyons will be looking for their third straight 2nd Region All A championship as the tournament gets underway at four sites Tuesday evening. And, for the second time in that three-year span, their toughest matchup could come in the opening round of the tournament.
The Lyons are set to travel to Hopkinsville Tuesday night to take on University Heights in an opening-round contest. In 2021, the Lyons picked up a two-point win on their home floor, with UHA just missing a desperation heave at the final horn. That Lyon County win ended an eight-game losing streak to the Blazers.
Lyon County enters the tournament at 14-4 and already has big wins over Livingston Central and Crittenden County.
University Heights comes into the week at 6-6 and figures to be the team with the best chance at knocking off the two-time defending champions, especially with the game being played inside the ‘cozy’ confines of Blazer Gym. UHA has big wins over fellow All A teams Heritage Christian and Crittenden County.
If you are looking for an underdog to have a chance to make a stunning run in the tourney, you might have to look to the top half of the bracket. Livingston Central travels to Heritage Christian Tuesday night, while Fort Campbell will host Dawson Springs. One could make an argument for just about any of those four to get hot and come out of the top half of the bracket, but getting past the team that comes out of the bottom half is going to require taking ‘hot’ to another level.
In addition to the UHA-Lyon County contest, the bottom section of the bracket will have a Tuesday night matchup between Caldwell County and Crittenden County.
Outside of the ‘big two’, the other six teams in the 2nd Region All A, all appear to be fairly closely grouped together. Heritage Christian, Fort Campbell, Dawson Springs, and Livingston Central have an advantage over Crittenden County and Caldwell County as they drew away from the Lyon County-UHA winner, so one of those four is going to reach the final.
After Tuesday evening’s opening round games, the semifinals will be played Friday evening at Caldwell County High School.
The championship game will be played Saturday night at Caldwell County.
