The Madisonville-North Hopkins Lady Maroons built a 38-20 halftime advantage, then held off Lyon County late for a 58-44 triumph Saturday afternoon in Madisonville.

The Lady Lyons (7-12) actually got out of the gate well, holding an 8-4 advantage early in the contest.

But Madisonville (15-6) quickly turned things around. The Lady Maroons used a 15-2 run to grab a 19-10 lead after 8 minutes.

Madisonville also outscored Lyon 19-10 in the second quarter to get to the break with its 18-point lead.

But Lyon crept to within 47-32 after three quarters.

A 6-0 burst midway through the final frame had the Lady Lyons as close as 52-42 when Trinity Taylor made one of two free throws with 3:10 remaining in the game.

But Riley Sword buried a short jumper at the other end to break Lyon’s run, and the Lady Maroons went on to win by 14.

Sword finished with 19 points while Destiny Whitsell had 17 and Amari Lovan 10 for Madisonville.

Taylor topped Lyon with 15 points. Piper Cotham had 13 points while Courtney Collins grabbed 16 rebounds to go with eight points.

Lyon’s girls, who had won three straight before Saturday’s setback, are scheduled to play again Tuesday at Dawson Springs.
