
The Crittenden County got a big performance from the 5th District’s all-time leading scorer and stayed unbeaten in 5th District play Friday night. The Lady Rockets scored the first basket of the game and never trailed on their way to a 67-50 win over the Lyon County Lady Lyons in Eddyville.
Taylor Guess, who recently became the district’s all-time top scorer, finished the night with 38 to head up the Lady Rocker effort.
With Taylor Guess leading the way, the Lady Rockets got out to a good start on the night. The Lady Rocket defensive pressure caused Lyon County some early problems as well as the Lady Lyons had some ball security issues. Crittenden County got out to an early 8-4 lead. The lead would be as many as 8 points before the quarter ended with Crittenden County up 17-11.
The second quarter was a story of two big runs, one in each direction. With Taylor Guess staying hot, Crittenden County was able to extend the lead to 10 points at 25-15. Lyon County came battling right back. Led by a stong effort from Lexi Holland and Piper Cotham, Lyon County scored the next ten points to even things up at 25-25. The Lady Lyons had a chance to get to the lead, but didn’t, and it might have cost them.
The Lady Rockets then closed out the half with a 15-4 run to take a 40-29 lead into the locker room at the break. Taylor Guess had a monster half with 23 points for Crittenden County.
Lyon County continued to struggle offensively against the Crittenden County zone defense as the second half got started. The Lady Rockets would run the lead out to as many as 16 early in the third quarter. Crittenden County then finished the quarter by scoring the final six points to take a 57-38 lead.
The Lady Rockets kept the pedal to the floor and pulled away as the fourth quarter got started. The Lady Lyons found few opportunities to attack the Crittenden County zone and got not get many shots over it to go down from the outside. The lead would get to as many as 23 points in the final quarter before settling in for the final 17 point margin.
Four Lady Lyons finished the night in double figures led by Piper Cotham with 12. Courtney Collins and Lexi Holland had 11 each. Trinity Taylor rounded it out with 10.
Taylor Guess’ 38 topped the scoring column for Crittenden County. Elliot Evans and Anna Boone added 8 points each.
Lyon County drops to 7-13 while Crittenden County improves to 17-4.
