Often a coach’s son can miss out on some things with his parent because of the time commitment coaching a sport demands.

Then there are other times where being a coach’s son can have some special perks like it did for 6-year-old Knox Hamlin Friday night at Mercer County High School.

His father, Josh, is the head boys basketball coach at Mercer County and his Titans easily beat Trinity Christian 88-47. However, I am not sure Knox really cared.

No, he was ecstatic after sitting on the Our Savior Lutheran (New York) bench in the first game when OSL beat CHI Prep 95-72. He wore an orange Tennessee T-shirt with No. 5 — the number of Tennessee guard Zakai Zeigler. The Tennessee guard’s brother, Armoni Zeigler, played for OSL and had six points, five steals, two rebounds and two assists in the win.

Knox Hamlin got to high five and talk to the players during the game and UConn signee Youssourf Singare, who had 27 points and 13 rebounds, gave him a ride on his shoulders after the game.

Knox got a basketball autographed by all the OSL players and coaches after the game. Armoni Zeigler tried to FaceTime with his brother so Knox could talk to him but limited cell service prevented that. However, he promised to hook Knox up with his brother Saturday.

“That’s all part of the experiences I want these kids to have,” Our Savior Lutheran coat Peter Wehye said. “Having Knox with us was fun for him hopefully but was also a lot of fun for our guys.”

Wehye has brought teams to Marshall County and McCracken County to play before for Grind Session events like the one this weekend at Mercer County (his team won the Grind Session championship last year).

“I love Kentucky. I have a lot of love for Kentucky because people here love basketball,” he said.

His team starts five Division I signees and plays Premier Prep (Arizona) Saturday night at 6.

“My team is fun to watch. They are a dynamic group,” Wehye said. “We have had an up and down season but we don’t run from challenges. I love this group and am almost disappointed that the season is coming to an end soon.”
