Western Kentucky University retired the jersey of one its legendary players on Saturday, honoring the late Dwight Smith in a halftime ceremony.

Smith was a high school star at Princeton Dotson before going on to play for some of the best teams ever on The Hill.

The event saw the return of numerous Hilltopper greats, including Greg Smith, who played alongside his brother at both Dotson and Western Kentucky before going on to win a World Championship with the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks in 1971.

YSE spoke with Greg Smith on Saturday prior to the halftime ceremony honoring his brother.

  1. This was such a special day for our family. We never gave thought about the occurring. It wasn’t an honor we pursued as a family. The greater family of beloved fans made this happen. We are so grateful for those who wanted and supported this. Clem Haskins said that it was long overdue as would so many Princetonians would agree. All things happen for a reason. I believe there were some in that crowd who needed to bear witness to this moment in time.
