Februarys haven’t been kind to the Trigg County Wildcats over the past decade, but this year’s version is turning the tables on what has historically been a month of losses.
The Wildcats beat Hopkins County Central 67-64 Friday night to improve to 4-1 this month. Coming into this season, Trigg County was 11-26 in February over the past six years.
Friday’s game with the Storm was a back-and-forth affair that featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes. There were five lead changes in the last four minutes alone.
The biggest lead either team had was an eight-point Hopkins Central advantage at 56-48 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Landon Stewart hit consecutive 3-pointers to get the Wildcats to within 56-54. Both teams exchanged the lead in the final four minutes. After Namari Hall’s putback gave the Storm a 64-63 lead with 1:34 left, Luke Washer gave the Wildcats the lead at 65-64 with 26 seconds left. Hopkins Central missed the go-ahead shot with eight seconds left. After a foul, Washer hit a pair of free throws for the final three-point margin.
Travahn Jones scored 11 points in the first quarter as the Storm got off to a fast start. He finished with a game-high 20 points. Hopkins Central hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter and nine in the half but couldn’t shake the Wildcats.
Deonyae Butcher hit four of Hopkins Central’s 12 three-pointers but battled foul trouble in the first half. Hall had 11 points and nine rebounds, and Trevor Wheldon added 10 points and five assists.
Stewart led Trigg County with 16 points, and Washer and Hunter Reynolds each scored 14 points.
The Wildcats shot 48-percent from the field and hit 11-of-14 free throws.
The Trigg win snapped a two-game losing streak in the series, which Hopkins Central still leads 12-11.
