Ripley’s Penguin Dash 5K is unique in so many ways

Cheryl Hatfield and Debbie Cox, both of North Myrtle Beach, were second in the costume contest at the Ripley’s Penguin Dash 5K Run/Walk. The two have various costumes to wear to local races because they like having fun.

It was more than just a little bit cold by Myrtle Beach standards Saturday morning for the Ripley’s Penguin Dash 5K Run/Walk at Broadway at the Beach.

It was sunny but brisk 38 degrees— or as Myrtle Beach residents called it “bitter cold” — for this event but it was still a lot of fun.

Just consider:

— Where else can you get your picture made with the Ripley’s Aquarium shark and penguin mascots before the race with a palm tree in the background?

— Where else would you find a hot chocolate bar after the race complete with marshmallows, sprinkles and more — along with hot cider?

— Where else could you run with participants dressed in penguin suits?

— Where else would you find a 5K that gives you free admission to an attraction as interesting as Ripley’s Aquarium like this one did?

— Where else could you get your photo holding a surfboard as part of NS Promos — the race management company — added service?

— Where else could you watch a check presentation for penguin research made to Ripley’s Aquarium because of donations from race participants?

— Where else would age division winners get a miniature stuffed penguin for an award?

— Where else would elementary school cheerleaders — in uniform — be there to cheer each time you passed them during three trips around the one-mile loop?

— Where else would you find not only a 1-mile fun run but also a Toddler Waddle where all the participants also got a miniature penguin?

Runners/walkers from several states (Utah, Wisconsin, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Massachusetts) participated along with two from Fort Erie, Ontario.

The race was so well organized from starting on time to having plenty of volunteers on the course and at the finish to results being available promptly.

Would I do this event again? Absolutely and it is kind of special to know you are helping raise money for penguin research.

I finished in 37 minutes, 10 seconds — an 11:59 mile pace —and was about in the middle of the 223 finishers. And maybe that was not a PR (personal record) for me but I figured it was a PR for 2023 in Myrtle Beach, so why not get a picture with the sign provided by NS Promos.
