The Christian County Colonels are back in the 8th District championship game for the second year in a row. The Colonels unleashed a devastating first-half run to power past an undermanned Fort Campbell team 80-31 in Monday night’s first semifinal game in Lyle Dunbar Gym.
The Falcons, who lost two starters to injury in Saturday’s game against Fort Knox, hung with the Colonels for about half a quarter and then the roof caved in on the Falcons.
With the Christian County lead at 11-7, the Colonels scored the last 12 points of the opening quarter to take a 23-7 lead. That run would continue when the second quarter got started.
The Colonels scored the first eleven of the second quarter as the lead ballooned to 34-7.
After a basket by Fort Campbell’s John Arnold, Christian County dropped the hammer for good with a 17-0 run, blowing the lead on out to 51-9. At the break, the Colonels led 56-10. At points during the 40-2 run, it was almost like the old ‘Showtime’ Lakers for Christian County as Derrell Bateman, Jordan Miles, Breland Morrison, Trey Blanton, and George Sanders, all had highlight reel plays.
Christian County’s starters and first-line subs were all done for the night at the half, as younger Colonel reserves saw all of the action in the second half with the running clock in play.
The Christian County lead was 65-18 after the third, with the Colonels rolling on to the 49-point win.
Jordan Miles led the Colonels with 12 points. Derrell Bateman added 11 points, eight of them coming on highlight-reel dunks. Trey Blanton had nine, while Breland Morrison finished with eight.
Aidan Blaszkowski was the leading scorer for the Falcons with 10 points. John Arnold ended the night with 8. Daniel Castro added 7.
Fort Campbell wraps up their season at 4-21.
The Colonels improve to 17-12 and advance to Thursday night’s district championship game.
