The 2023 high school softball season hasn’t even officially begun, but Caldwell County already has its first official college softball signee of the year.
Laney Jones signed with Midway University in a ceremony Wednesday afternoon in front of family and Lady Tiger teammates in the Fine Arts Theatre at Caldwell County High School.
Jones said that Midway became interested in her while she was playing travel ball during the high school off-season. While playing for a team from New Albany, Indiana, in November, Jones was seen by Midway head coach Krystal Cammuse, who offered her the opportunity to play for the Eagles.
Midway University went 30-16 last season and earned a berth in the River States Conference Tournament. The 30 wins were the most in a single season dating back to before the 2005-06 season.
Midway is an NAIA school in Midway, Kentucky, located between Lexington and Frankfort.

Jones hit .296 with three doubles and 12 runs batted in last spring as the Caldwell County Lady Tigers went 16-13 and reached the semifinals of the 2nd Region tournament.
Caldwell head coach Seath Butts says Jones has improved her game tremendously since the start of high school ball last season.
Jones projects as an outfielder at Midway.
Laney is a daughter of Wendi Melton.
Jones plans to study Sports Management at Midway with a minor of Sports Marketing.
But before that, she still has her senior season at Caldwell, which gets underway next month.
