Trigg County is going back to the region basketball tournament for the first time in seven years following Tuesday’s 57-49 win over Crittenden County in the 5th District semifinals.

The six-year drought was the longest for the program since the early 1990s and came on the heels of Trigg winning four straight district titles.

Trigg’s dominance in the paint offset a lousy shooting night from the outside. The Wildcats outscored the Rockets 38-20 in the paint but shot just 1-of-16 from 3-point range. Every time it looked like Trigg had figured out that attacking the paint and scoring inside was the way to go, missed 3-pointers would follow and Crittenden County would chip away at the Wildcat lead.

Trigg ended the first half on a 10-2 run to take a 25-24 lead into the locker room. They scored the first seven points of the second half for a 32-24 lead and never trailed in the second half.

The Rockets got as close as six points on three occasions in the fourth quarter but Trigg hit 12-of-22 free throws down the stretch – just enough – the clinch the win.

Jhaden Vaughn paced four Wildcats in double figures with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Landon Stewart added 15 points, and Luke Washer scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Travis Champion led Crittenden County with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Preston Morgeson scored 15 points.

Trigg County will play Lyon County in Friday’s championship game at 6 pm.
