After losing the previous seven games against the Christian County Colonels this century, the Lyon County Lyons head into their next matchup, and a very important one at that,  having won the last two. Lyon County and Christian County will square off Monday night in the first of two 2nd Region boys’ semifinals at Madisonville-North Hopkins.

Between 2001 and last season, Christian County owned the series by winning seven straight. However, the two teams did not play each other from March 2010 until last season’s regional tournament. The Colonels won seven straight over the Lyons during that time frame with the closest of those being 12 points.

The Lyons turned the tables in the opening round of last year’s regional tournament, getting past the Colonels 63-51 on their way to a regional championship.

The two teams met earlier this season, with Lyon County coming out on top 85-72. The Colonels got into early foul trouble in the game and the Lyons took full advantage of it.

Travis Perry had a monster game that night of December 10, finishing the night with 41 points. Jack Reddick added 20. While Brady Shoulders had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Derrell Bateman caused the Lyons problems inside. The Colonel big man ended up with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Miles added 12, while Breland Morrison, finished with 11 points.

Both teams shot better than 50 percent in the game. The Lyons did hit 9 three-pointers compared to the Colonels’ three. Lyon County was money at the free throw line, going 28-32, while Christian County ended up 13-23.

One thing that will be different this time is that the Lyons now have Bradin Nelson in the starting lineup. The transfer from Webster County just became eligible last week and has made an immediate impact for the Lyons. Nelson is averaging 10 points per contest in his two games with Lyon County.

The two teams are set to tipoff Monday night at 6pm, while Hopkinsville and Henderson County to follow. The regional title game is set for Tuesday night at 6pm.
