A tough start to the afternoon was too much for Lyon County to overcome Saturday in the Donnie Everett Classic. The Lyons fell behind 5-0 in the top of the first inning and never got back on track as they fell to Dickson County 15-2 in a game played at Clarksville High School.
The momentum of the game swung very early on a tough play and a tough call as part of the play. Dickson County had a runner at second with two outs in the top of the first inning. Lyon County pitcher John Bingham struck out the Cougars’ Cade Pilkinton for what would have been the third out, except the pitch got away from Lyon County catcher Peyton Willliams on what was scored a wild pitch and Pilkinton was able to reach base.
Instead of being out of the inning, the Lyons found themselves facing runners on the corners with two outs and it did not take it long to go from bad to worse.
Owen Hutcheson was the next batter for Dickson County and he took the very first pitch he saw and drove one over the right field fence to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. A walk, two hit batters, and a single later, Dickson County had a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
The Cougars would add a run in the third, a run in the fourth, and two runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 9-0.
The Lyons got a little momentum in the bottom half of the inning as they pushed two runs across the plate. Peyton Williams doubled to left, scoring John Bingham and Eli Baker to cut the lead to 9-2, but the rally for the afternoon would end right there.
Dickson County scored two more in the top of the sixth and then slammed the door closed with four runs in the top of the seventh.
Five different Lyons had one hit apiece in the game. In addition to Peyton Williams, Austin Spears, Brady Belt, Aiden Waters, and Eli Baker connected for Lyon County.
John Bingham was the starter and was charged with the loss. He gave up seven runs, five of them earned, on six hits in four innings of work. He struck out five and walked two.
The Lyon defense had its issues on the afternoon, as the Lyons were charged with five errors in the game.
Lyon County (7-4) will open play in the 2nd Region All A Classic Monday evening when they host Caldwell County.
