Experience in Huddle and With Play-Action Passes Could Help Will Levis Transition to NFL

One ESPN NFL draft analyst believes the systems Will Levis played in at Kentucky should make him more attractive in the upcoming NFL draft.

Jordan Reid believes the “biggest hurdle” for some college quarterbacks after they are drafted is “adjusting” to an NFL system.

“Now these guys don’t even huddle and don’t understand how to call plays in a huddle because they have never had to relay that information,” said Reid. “That’s a big hurdle for some guys.

“Will (Levis) has experience in a huddle as well as the play-action game,” Reid said. “He was asked to do that a lot in the (Rich) Scangarello and (Liam) Coen systems. They had him do that.”

Recently some mock draft speculation has Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson going ahead of Levis in the draft because of his workouts for NFL scouts that showcased his speed and leaping ability.

“From a stature standpoint, they are very similar,” Reid said. “Then you get into the pluses and minuses of both.

“Will Levis has been in more pro-style schemes. He has experience walking through the door of what he will be asked to do as a pro. Richardson is different. He was in more of a college concept and was not asked to do nearly as much as Levis was asked to do.

“But potential is a word that gets people excited. Anthony is 21. Will (Levis) will be 24. I can see some teams using that (age difference) to differentiate between them.”

Reid likes the confidence Levis has shown during the draft process.

“He is a very confident individual and that is a trait you want to see,” Reid said.

Reid believes NFL teams have probably asked Levis about a specific set of plays from last season to see what his “recall” is on his decision-making.

“I would have him go through a specific progression on a play so you know what he was looking at and what he was asked to do and what he was supposed to do,” Reid said. “When he is ripping the ball, he is fine. Teams are also going to want to judge how his touch is and what his recall is on certain things as they evaluate their draft decisions.”
