Brett Hoskins doubled twice and drove in two runs, a pair of Eagles went deep, and the Ohio County High School baseball squad broke out the sticks to end a three-game slide Thursday, defeating Todd County Central 16-0 in six innings.
The host Rebels got roughed up from the jump, allowing three runs in the first inning and eight more in the sixth to fall in the run-shortened contest. It’s just the third time in 15 games this season that Todd Central has been defeated via mercy rule.
Ohio County (8-7) jumped ahead on a Hoskins RBI double and pair of Rebel errors in the opening frame, went up 4-0 on one of seven TCCHS errors in the third, and then took complete control with a four-spot in the fourth, which was highlighted by a two-run double from Hoskins and homer by Jaylen Walker.
Eagles starting pitcher faced just one batter — a flyout from Todd Central’s Preston Rager — before exiting early. Nolan Baize, making his first appearance on the mound this season, went the final 5 2/3 innings, striking out eight, allowing just five hits and walking a pair.
Gavyn Nolan (0-4) took the loss for the Rebels after giving up 10 hits, 14 runs (11 earned) and five walks in 5 1/3 inning. He did have four strikeouts. Conner Wheeler threw 2/3 innings in relief, with one hit, two runs, a walk and a strikeout.
Todd County Central was led offensively by Nate Reding, who 2-for-2. Peyton Ortiz doubled for the Rebels’ lone extra-base hit, but he was stranded at third to end the fourth inning in Elkton. Nathan Ellis and Devin Schutt each had a single and a stolen base in defeat.
TCCHS (8-7) has dropped five of its last six games, but will try to turn things around with consecutive district game against Franklin-Simpson (3-13) on April 17 and 18.
