Justin Haddix played quarterback for coach Mike Holcomb at Breathitt County High School and won the 2002 Class AA state championship before going on to a successful career at Western Kentucky University.
Holcomb is a coaching legend in Kentucky who won his 300th career game last season at Madison Central. Haddix, who also began his coaching career under Holcomb at Breathitt County, has now won three straight state championships at Boyle County High School.
On June 4 the two coaches will host the Riverbank Quarterback/Receiver Academy at Centre College. There will be a session for players in grades six to eight from 1-4 p.m. and a session for players in grades 9-12 from 5-8 p.m.
Haddix remembers his days as a quarterback and how he didn’t want to go to a camp where he might have to run routes while another quarterback threw passes.
“If you are a quarterback, you want to throw the ball,” Haddix said. “So coach Holcomb and I came up with this idea. He is very modest but he brought the passing game to the mountains and has coached great quarterbacks and won at different places.”
Haddix and Holcomb did not want to have the camp on a high school campus but felt the facilities at Centre College were perfect.
“(Centre) Coach Andy Frye was all for it,” Haddix said. “He gets to show off his campus and facilities and we have a great place for the camp. A couple of his coaches are going to help us.
“I have some high school coaches lined up to help and some of our coaches will be helping. I want to have one coach per 10 players so they are all getting coached the whole time. That’s why we are splitting into two sessions.”
The Boyle coach would like to have 100 quarterbacks participating and based on early registration thinks that is a realistic goal.
The coaches have various competitions planned for both sessions and want to make this an annual camp.
“We want kids to keep coming back as they get bigger and stronger,” Haddix said. “This is something I have been wanting to do but was not sure it was feasible. Centre made that possible.”
Haddix is hoping for a big local turnout of players but early registration included players from Russellville, Glasgow and Breathitt County.
