
Caldwell County and Carlisle County busted out the bats in a big way in a back-and-forth baseball matchup Saturday afternoon.
Caysen Mitchell’s RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning finally gave homestanding Carlisle an 18-17 victory over the Tigers.
Each side had a seven-run inning in a game that saw Caldwell lead 9-1 early before falling behind 15-10 through four innings.
The Tigers (10-6) regrouped to take a 16-15 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
But Carlisle (8-9) went back in front 17-16 through six innings.
Caldwell loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh, and tied the game when Jamus Carneyhan was hit by a pitch to force in a run.
However, the Comets put together a one-out rally in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game.
Carlisle outhit the Tigers 14-13.
Brennan O’Neill pitched the top of the eighth inning for the Comets, blanking the Tigers, to pick up the win on the mound.
Jamus Carneyhan paced the Caldwell offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, four runs scored and five runs batted in. Collin Whittington went 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs.
For Carlisle, Koltyn Perez was 3-for-5 with a double, triple, four runs scored and two runs batted in. Kenton Arnold and Jarren Bruer each homored for the Comets.
The teams combined for 35 runs, which ties the Caldwell single-game record. The Tigers beat Christian County 18-17 in 1988.
Caldwell is back in action on Monday against Webster County at the VFW Ballpark in Princeton.
