Caldwell County’s girls came up just short against Webster County again on Monday, dropping their second 5-4 decision to the Lady Trojans this season.
And, for the second time, Webster got out of a jam in the seventh inning to preserve the victory.
Trailing 5-2 going to the seventh, Caldwell got a leadoff single from Adley Lewis, then a two-run home run from Alicia Stanley to pull within a single run.
Harper Holeman and Brylee Butts followed with back-to-back singles to put two on with no outs.
However, a double play on a grounder to second took much of the sting out of the inning. Then a grounder to short ended the game with the potential tying run at third base.
Webster (12-1) scored twice in the second and once in the third to grab a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Holeman doubled home a run and Kenzie McConnell singled in another to get Caldwell within 3-2.
But Webster added runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings to build its 5-2 advantage.
Holeman was 3-for-4 for the Lady Tigers, who outhit Webster 13-9. McConnell finished 2-for-3 while Stanley and Butts were each 2-for-4.
Chloe Papineau (10-1) was the winning pitcher for Webster. She allowed four earned runs in seven innings while striking out six and walking one.
Alexis Wood (6-7) suffered the loss for Caldwell, giving up four earned runs on nine hits while fanning four and walking one.
Maddie Gray homered and went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in for the Lady Trojans. Papineau was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Caldwell will host Hopkins County Central for 7th District action on Tuesday.
