Lyons Make Regional Statement with Win at Christian County

The battle between two teams expected to contend for the 2nd Region baseball championship went to the road team Saturday. Lyon County hit three home runs and took advantage of six Christian County errors as the Lyons claimed a 15-7 win at Christian County High School.

A seven-run top of the third gave Lyon County an 11-5 lead, a lead the Lyons would not surrender over the final four innings. The Lyons came up with six hits in the inning and were the beneficiaries of a Colonel error that allowed two runs to score.

The Lyons set the tone for the game early on, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. John Bingham had the big hit in the inning with a one-out home run to left. Aiden Waters added an RBI single in the inning.

Aiden Lewis drove in a run for Christian County in the bottom of the inning to trim the lead to 4-1. The Colonels then erupted for four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-4 lead. The big hit in the inning was a two-run single from Elijah Underhill.

Then the bottom came out of the bucket for the Colonels. Brady Belt tied the game for Lyon County in the top of the third with an RBI double. Peyton Carney drove in a pair of runs with another double. A two-run error by the Colonels allowed the Lyons to extend the lead to 9-5. After a run scored on a wild pitch, Peyton Williams finished the rally with an RBI double to make it 11-4.

After the Colonels got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning, the Lyons effectively closed the door on the game with three runs in the top of the fourth. After one run scored on a wild pitch, Austin Spears cracked a two-run shot to left to run the lead out to 14-6. The Lyons would get an insurance run in the seventh off a solo home run from Eli Baker.

Baker had a big day for the Lyons, going 3-5 with the home run, a double, an RBI, and three runs scored. Peyton Williams ended up 3-5 with a double and an RBI. Austin Spears was 1-4 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored. Brady Belt went 1-5 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

Gage Montes was 2-5 for the Colonels with an RBI. Preston Phan finished 2-3. Elijah Underhill was 1-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Eddie Davis ended the game at 1-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

John Bingham got the win on the mound for the Lyons, going four innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits, striking out six, and walking five.

Preston Phan was charged with the loss for Christian County. Phan went four innings giving up 14 runs. However, due to Colonel miscues in the field, only five of the runs were earned. He struck out one and walked one.
