Trigg Drops Pair at McLean County

A trip to Calhoun Saturday saw the Trigg County Wildcats drop a pair of games to the McLean County Cougars in an inter-region doubleheader. McLean County won the opener 11-5 and then completed the sweep with a 6-3 win on their home field.

The first game of the day saw both teams battle fielding issues. Both the Wildcats and the Cougars were charged with five errors but it was McLean County that found more success at the plate on their way to the six-run win.

Trigg was up 3-2 headed into the bottom of the second when the Cougars plated four runs to take the lead for good. McLean County scored four runs on back-to-back doubles as they took a 6-3 lead in the game.

The Cougars added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 8-3.

Trigg County used a McLean County error and an RBI triple from Kaiden McCormick to get back within 8-5 in the top of the sixth. But, McLean County secured the win by coming back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, two of those runs coming off a Trigg error.

Matthew Leeper was 3-4 with a double and two runs scored. Mac McCormick finished the game 2-4 with a triple and two RBIs.

Aidon Butts got the start for Trigg County going 4 2/3 innings, giving up 8 runs, just five of them earned, on 10 hits, striking out three, and walking one.

In the nightcap, McLean County broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on their way to a 7-4 win.

Trigg took the early lead, using a McLean County error and a ground out to go up 2-0 after half an inning. The Cougars came back and got three runs in the bottom of the inning, two of them coming on a home run to left from Houston Whitaker.

The Wildcats tied the game up at 3-3 on an RBI single from Aidon Butts.

The Cougars took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth, using three singles and a hit batter to generate three runs and go up 6-3.

Matthew Leeper ended up 2-4 with two runs scored. Aidon Butts was 2-3 with an RBI. Aaron Despain finished the game 2-3 with a double.

Chase Hampton went the distance on the hill for the Wildcats. He gave up seven runs on eight hits, striking out seven while walking none.
