Chloe Penrod is nicknamed “Red” and had her opponent seeing plenty of it Monday. The freshman smacked her second homer of the season, Crissy Higgins had a double and matched Penrod’s four-RBI performance, and the Russellville High School softball team ran past University Heights Academy for a 19-6 win in five innings.
UHA held an early lead after Mallory Ladd walked and scored on a single in the first inning. The Blazers even went ahead 2-0 on one of seven Panther errors during the opening frame. But host Russellville would respond in a massive way with 17 total runs during the next two innings to take complete control.
While scoring a dozen runs in the second inning, including Penrod’s two-run home run, Russellville (13-9) nearly batted around twice, as Ja’eda Poindexter had two hits in the bottom of the second. She finished 2-for-3 and was one of six Panthers to record multi-hit games.
Madison Penrod earned the pitching victory for her squad, striking out a trio of Blazers and allowing five runs (two earned) in three innings. Chloe Penrod closed out the run-shortened game with two strikeouts during two innings of relief. Ladd had a tough night in the circle for Heights but did finish 3-for-3 with two runs, two stolen bases, and a walk at the dish.
UHA (1-7) is home for four straight home games, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against Fort Campbell. The Blazers finish off the homestand May 5 against Dawson Springs. Heights won its lone game of the season against DSHS by a count of 15-0 on May 20.
